Everyone likes a good ghost story; and the wild myths, legends, and tales of the supernatural that have grown up around the city that rose from the desert are some of the most bizarre and spine-tingling to speculate about. This is most probably due to its gangster-born origins and well-earned reputation for “anything goes.” However, the city has had its fair share of myths. Here are a few that simply need to be debunked.

(1) Little Green Men

Aliens supposedly crash landed in the Nevada desert in the early 1940s, and Area 51, a not-so-secret “top secret” Air Force base just northwest of Vegas, is reportedly being used as a storage facility for the alien spacecraft they found in Roswell, New Mexico. There is also bizarre speculation that the government is secretly rendezvousing with a whole species of extraterrestrials without the rest of the world knowing about it.

(2) Ladies of the Evening are Legal in Vegas

Despite all sorts of rumors and misconceptions, prostitution is not legal in Vegas. It is, however, legal about 45 minutes away in Pahrump, Nevada.

(3) Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy Died of His Injuries Inflicted by His Show Tiger

There have been a few overzealous reporters who have sworn they have evidence that Roy Horn, of the Las Vegas Siegfried & Roy magic team, died several years ago from the wounds he suffered at the paws of his beloved tiger Montecore and was then replaced by a cousin posing as the magician himself.

(4) Bodies Buried in the Hoover Dam

Bodies being buried in Vegas are old news to most locals and not entirely unfounded due to the city’s historical ties to mobster activity. Yet the story of the seven workers permanently buried in the Hoover Dam’s concrete during its construction from 1931 to 1936 has been proven to be completely unfounded. While public officials continue to this day to assure residents that no one was permanently buried in the concrete, there are still those who insist the workers are still under the dam and haunting all those who visit it.

Back in the showgirls’ heyday in Las Vegas, there were so many shows in town that aspiring showgirls could move here and be confident in finding a job fairly quickly because there were so many openings. Now, however, there’s only one performance in town that features the true vintage showgirl: Jubilee–performed twice a day, six days a week at Bally’s. The longest running concept show in the city, it’s been going strong since 1981 and shows no signs of slowing down.

Although they are a vanishing breed nowadays, the image of the showgirl is central to Las Vegas. They have a very distinctive look. They’re tall–much taller than other dancers. The height requirements for performing in Jubilee are between 5’9″ and 6’2″. On top of that, they perform wearing two- or three-inch heels, plus their signature headdresses that can be up to four feet tall and have yards of fabric trailing behind. In order to perform with such a demanding schedule with those heavy headpieces and elaborate costumes, the dancers need to have had years of training in various types of dance, especially ballet, jazz, and contemporary.

A classic Las Vegas show

With nearly 100 performers and 1,000 costumes, this enormous show is performed on a stage 15 stories high and half a football field wide. The production sweeps the audience on a journey through world history and popular culture, covering everything from Samson and Delilah to the sinking of the Titanic to Hollywood musicals to the rise of disco. Holding to the showgirl tradition, parts of the show are performed topless, although a special family-friendly “covered” show is performed on Saturdays at 7:30.

Jubilee is a show like no other and is definitely not to be missed by anyone who wants to experience the real Las Vegas. It’s a performance you won’t soon forget.

Atomic Liquors: Las Vegas’s Oldest Bar

Opened in 1952, Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas. It was originally built as Virginia’s Cafe in 1945 but was renamed when the clientele became more interested in drinking cocktails and watching the nearby atomic test site blasts than they were about the food the cafe served. It was redone as Atomic Liquors with its huge wraparound bar and trademark neon sign that still blazes today. After its 2012 remodel it looks better than ever and is still a popular spot to grab a drink.

Besides being a great place to hang out, Atomic Liquors has various events throughout the year. Besides their Thursday happy hour specials, they host the Vegas Indie Film Festival in May and have filmmaking weekends once or twice a year.

If you go there and think it looks familiar, that’s because it’s been used as a location in many films, including The Hangover, Casino, The Gauntlet, and even an episode from the original Twilight Zone.
